The Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CTESL) Program is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective teachers of English as a second language. Students who complete this 15 credit hour program receive a certificate in TESL from the University in New Brunswick Saint John.
The program is designed for three groups:
1) English speakers who have completed an undergraduate degree and are seeking employment in TESL.
2) International students who have completed an undergraduate degree,
have an acceptable standard of English, and wish to receive TESL
certification in an English-speaking environment.
3) Native English speakers who want to obtain a TESL certificate while pursuing an undergraduate degree.
Eligibility
It is necessary for students to apply for admission to the CTESL Program.
Candidates seeking admission to the Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language must have completed 30 credit hours at a recognized post-secondary institution with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.7 (B-) They must be able to demonstrate an advanced level of written and spoken English. The Faculty of Arts reserves the right to test oral and written proficiency in English.
If you are not a UNB student or if you are requesting credit (up to 6ch) for previous course work related to TESL, you will need to provide an original transcript as evidence of previous university course work completed outside UNB.

The CTESL Program consists of three required or core courses and two related electives, for a total of 15 credit hours. The core courses are ED 3561 ' Introduction to Second Language Education, ED 4562 ' Advanced Studies in ESL Education, and ED 5566 ' Field Experience in TESL. In simple terms, the first course provides students with the theory of teaching a second language; the second course provides students with the methodology for teaching English as a second language. This involves learning how to diagnose students' language levels and using various resources to develop appropriate lesson plans. The third course provides the opportunity for practical, hands-on classroom experience ' initially observing certified ESL instructors, then actually teaching up to a total of 10 hours of lessons.
The first core course is normally offered one evening per week for 3 hours during the regular Fall Semester; the second and third courses are concurrent and are offered in the Winter Semester from January to April. ED 4562 is offered one night a week, however, the practicum course (ED 5566) requires CTESL students to join an ESL class during the day at various sites in the Saint John area. Our usual placements are at the Modern Languages Centre at UNBSJ, the LINC Program located at the YMCA, the Canadian Business Training Program at the NB Community College. Because the number of practicum placements is limited by the capacity of these institutions to accept interns, the number admitted to the CTESL Program must also be limited.
The additional two elective courses must support and complement the CTESL Program. Courses in linguistics are most appropriate, but other courses, which emphasize the grammar and syntax of a language, may be accepted. LING 2101 ' Introduction to Linguistics l, LING 3202 ' Introduction to Linguistics ll, CPW 1001 ' Writing in the Disciplines; CPW 2001 ' Writing in the Disciplines ll, and ED 4354 ' Early Years Literacy are a few examples. These may be taken at UNBSJ or may have been taken previously at another accredited university.
COSTS*
Costs vary from year to year. In September 2006, the cost per course was $535.00. International students must add a foreign student fee differential . Last year it was approximately $513.00 per course.

Paul-Émile Chiasson completed his doctoral studies at the Université de Franche-Comté, Besançon, France. Prior to becoming Coordinator of French Second Language Programs for School District 8, Dr. Chiasson taught French as a second language in the Public School system. He is the former Director of the Modern Language Center and teaches TESL courses at UNBSJ.
